                                          Cold Summer–CJ Hilton

I don’t usually watch music videos but this one has some really cool features that help to better tell the story. Making use of soft lighting, blurs, and vignetting when the female subject is in the frame reminds the audience that these are fading memories, she is no longer an integral part of his life. Intensifying the fading in certain shots and lessening speaks louder then if the protagonist blatantly told us which memories are stronger.

I really appreciate the shots in which CJ Hilton seeks refuge through the piano. The camera movements are also much more experimental, showing a shot from above followed by shots from the piano’s point. The camera does not pause for long but instead continuous to rotate of the room, the camera translates his agitation and worries.

I first heard this song at the close of the summer season and for some reason when I listen to it I get sense of relaxation, as if it were summer and all my worries just sink into the New York humidity. It’s a bit weird ain’t it since its supposed to be a sad song…oops
